About the Design
The kanji character “Iwai” (祝い / Celebration) featured on this sake barrel was created by contemporary calligrapher Ogino Tansetsu. Its powerful and bold strokes give the barrel both a nostalgic, traditional feeling and a refreshing, modern impression—perfect for ceremonies and celebrations.
Kagami Biraki – Japanese Sake Barrel Ceremony
The Kagami Biraki (鏡開き) ceremony involves breaking open a komodaru (sake barrel) with wooden mallets, symbolizing harmony and new beginnings. It is an essential ritual for weddings, store openings, corporate events, and school ceremonies, enjoyed by people of all ages.
This Iwai Sake Barrel Set includes:
・Barrel body
・Kagamiita (wooden lid)
・2 wooden mallets
・Bamboo ladle
Since the barrel is delivered unsealed and without sake, you can fill it with your own drinks (sake, shochu, or even non-alcoholic beverages). This makes it flexible for any type of celebration.
Capacity: maximum 18 liters (4.8 gallons). Filling more than 21 liters may cause liquid to spill when the lid is broken.
Sake is not included.
